Denpasar (Metrobali.com)-

Starting from 27 February, Flux Lifeground will be hosting an exhibition entitled WONDER featuring the unique works of Santy Wai Zakaria. WONDER will be Wai’s first solo exhibition and she will be displaying more than 25 art works including a majority of her signature oil paintings and a smattering of her digital illustrations. The exhibition will be open for viewing until 12 March from 10:00 – 18:00 (Monday – Sunday).

To speculate, to question, to ponder – these are all the given definitions for the word Wonder. Wonder is also the reason why Wai paints and embraces art. She fervently believes inletting curiosity, which for her encapsulates the term wonder, lead her thoughts and actions and she has let it drive her to take the leap and put on her first solo exhibition.

Santy Wai Zakaria was born in 1981 in Jakarta, Indonesia. She grew up in Medan – North Sumatera, surrounded by a mix of Chinese and Batak cultures, before she moved back to Jakarta to pursue her college education in Communication Design. After school, she worked as an art director for various foreign companies in the retail and commercial sector. Today, Wai lives on the island of Bali and began painting using oil as a medium four years ago.

Wai’s work is unique in the perspective that she channels into her paintings – from her surroundings, her subjects and her mood. She explains that each painting is a culmination of the energy exchanges during the process of its creation – from the set up in the studio, to the music, smell, weather, emotions and the connection she shares with the model. She puts a ‘world’ of memories into a painting. Each piece is obviously different but also very personal as she translates the honesty and liveliness of each character onto her canvas.

Exposure to her teacher’s in-depth knowledge of traditional European painting styles is the reason why her work pulls on the influence from great classic European masters such as Rembrandt, Monet and Matisse. She recalls standing in front of their work in the Louvre and being moved by the raw emotions, love and honesty that those artists evidently put into their masterpieces. Drawing on this, she strives to strike a balance in her work between emotions and the important of techniques, such as lighting, color, composition, perspective, anatomy, the golden ratio and many more in order to produce the alluring results that are on display at this exhibition.

With more than 11 years of experience as an illustrator and art director in the creative industry, Wai feels most natural in her art while using oil paints, as is evident in the bold and loose brushstrokes seen in her work. She also experiments regularly with other mediums such as ink, charcoal on paper and acrylic paint. Her biggest inspirations are humans and the truth they present. Additionally, she regularly creates digital sketches and illustrations inspired by her daily life with her little pug; some of which are also on display at this exhibition.

Wai believes that an artist’s journey is a never-ending road of searching for peace and enjoyment. In line with the theme of this exhibit, she believes that by allowing yourself to wonder about possibilities and to see past personal fears of the unknown, you allow yourself to open up and most importantly, to grow. Most of all, she hopes this solo exhibit will help her move to the next stage of her wonder; after all, curiosity is what drives her work. RED-MB
